What is a public page?

Sharing content with anonymous users outside the media portal is a frequent request from customers. The purpose of the public page is to give the ability to share a link to a video that can be viewed on a page OUTSIDE of the portal authentication. Clicking on this link takes the user to a page that loads the player, title and description of the video and holds the branding banner. There is no other information or content displayed from the portal.

With the public page you have a fast and easy way to share videos with viewers outside of the portal without having to embed a video in a page somewhere. The ability to enable a video for public page viewing is controlled at multiple levels (global, user, item) so that you donโ€™t have to worry about content being inadvertently shared outside of the secure video portal.

Who can create a public page?

The short answer is anyone who has the permission to create a public page in their role can enable one of their own videos for external viewing via the public page. This will require:

  • Enabling the public page feature for the media portal. This is a global setting managed by the administrator.
  • Assigning the EnablePublicPage permission to the userโ€™s role.

Even with the permission a user can only enable their own videos for public page access. Furthermore, only videos that are available to all portal users (i.e. privacy setting is set to Public) can be enabled for a public page.

How do I create a public page?

If the public page is enabled for your media portal, and you have permission to create a public page (permission is granted in your user role) you can enable the public page by editing the video details in My Account.

  1. Go to My Account and click on the media item for which you want to enable the public page.
  2. Click on the Properties tab and inside the Sharing permissions section, check the box for External public page.
  3. A public page URL will appear. This URL can be shared with anyone, and the public page will only load this particular media item. If someone tries to access another media item by changing the media ID in the URL, it will not display that media item.
  4. Click on Save changes.

How can I share a public page?

Now that you’ve created the public page, it’s time to share it. You can simply copy the URL from the Properties tab of the media item and send it in an email, text message, etc. Anyone with the link will be able to open the page and view the video.

How can I stop sharing a public page?

The simplest way to stop sharing a public page is to turn off the feature by deselecting the External public page box in the Sharing permissions section of the Properties tab for the media item.

If the media item expires, is deleted or disabled, or has its privacy changed to Restricted, the public page will be immediately disabled. And of course, if the public page feature is disabled globally, all existing public pages will also be disabled.
