Embedding expands the reach of your content beyond the Ravnur portal. By putting the media item where the viewers are, you increase the value of your content. Using an embed code, you can add your video, audio file, playlist or even a live stream to an external web page or application such as a Learning Management System. No programming skills are needed; all you need is edit permission on the target web page or application.

How is embedding enabled and controlled?

As with many features in the Ravnur media portal, the embedding feature is controlled at the global level and the item level, and is affected by user permissions. In order to use embedding, these prerequisites must be met:

  • Embedding must be turned on for your media portal (your portal administrator controls this).
  • Embedding must be turned on for the media item
  • You need to have permission in your role to embed media items (other than your own).
  • The web page where you want to add the embed code must have its domain whitelisted.

Where can I manage embed codes for my media items?

There are two places where you can find a media item’s embed code: in the item’s Edit view in My Account and on the item’s media details page (this is where users watch media items). It is in My Account where you can enable or disable embedding for your media item.

  1. Go to the media item in My Account and click on its thumbnail to access the Edit view.
  2. Click on the Properties tab, and you’ll find the control for embedding in the Sharing permissions section.
  3. Select/deselect the box for Allow embedding to enable/disable embedding for this item.
  4. Click on Save changes.

It’s important to note that in My Account you cannot manage the domain whitelist that controls where the media items are allowed to be embedded. This is managed by the administrator in the admin portal. If you need to embed a media item on a page whose domain is not whitelisted, contact your administrator to have the domain added.

Who can embed a media item?

This is a bit of a trick question. If embedding is enabled for a media item, anyone can add that embed code to a web page. Your grandmother, your neighbor, even a very talented cat could take the embed code and place it on a web page. That’s why Domain Whitelisting exists. In order for the player to load, the domain where the embed code has been added must be whitelisted. If it is not, the page will display an error message in place of the player. What player parameters can I manage?

The embed code contains parameters that affect how the player is rendered inside the iframe. For example, you can change the size of the player, whether it starts playing automatically, when it starts, etc. The embedding options are presented to you where you find the embed code (on the Embed tab of the Share feature on the media details page and on the Properties tab of the media edit form in My Account).

Parameter Video player Audio player Playlist player
Auto start Yes Yes Yes
Mute on start Yes Yes Yes
Set start time Yes Yes No
Show annotations Yes Yes Yes
Change position of playlist items N/A N/A Yes

How can I make the embedded player responsive?

This can be a tricky one. You can select Responsive as a player size, and the player’s dimensions will be set to 100% for height and width. And then when you add it to the page, it is absolutely not what you expected. The trick is that you need to give the page a way to adjust the iframe so that it responds to changes in the page size. This can be done with CSS or javascript. The details are described in this article, How to use responsive embed codes.
